CAMPBELL COLT WINS THE LUMBERMENS
STAKES AT CONNAUGHT PARK.
Li«rbt Showers Fall, hut Ottawa Track and Patron-
ape Are Unaffected — Gcrrard Chanpcg Hands
After Winninp Race for J. W. Schorr.
Olluwa. Out., June 10. — Threatening weather, fol
lew. (1 by lipht showers, bail but little effect on the
a t teiidanee at Connaught Park this afternoon. Con-
trary to expectations, a large crowd turned out. the
society element t«'inp well represented. The Linn
berinen’s Stakes, a dash of live furlongs. for two-
year "Ids, $J,2IM> added, was provided as a feature,
there were only four starters and two of them.
Corn Krooni and Cannock, were coupled as the C.
S Campbell and \V. K. ITosgrave entry. The race
was practically a two-horse affair all the way.
Corn Krooni took the lead from the start, with Can-
nock in close pursuit. Guy Kurus made a determined
< Hort with the latter in entering the homestretch,
where he was on almost even terms with Corn
Krooni. The pair fought it «>ut through the home-
stretch and in the filial drive the weight told on
Cannock and he tiled. The latter was giving Corn
Krooni eighteen pounds and this proved too much
of a handicap.
John W. Schorr took another purse when Gcrrard
won the sixth race. Like Gnauibrae. Gcrrard went
to the stable of another owner offer his victory,
.1. W. Iledriek purchasing the colt from Mr. Schorr
tor $l.t mV,. Gcrrard had his work cut out to beat
Golden Treat-lire. Ambrose gave Gerrard a smashing
good ride, bidding him well together in the stretch
racing and lie jusi managed to last long enough
to will by a head. Spellliound. the reissling favorite,
raced poorly. He was a bit unfortunate in the
run to the lirst turn, where he was caught in a
jam and it is just possible that this made the old
horse sulk. At all events, lie was a trailer all the
way and at no time did he appear able to im-
prove his position.
l'rince Chap was served up as the liest thing of
tile afternoon in the seventh race, but like K|iell-
bouial. he failed to materialize. lie was ridden by
c. lilies. It was tlie latter's first mount after get-
wing in from Kentucky this morning. lie will, it is
said, ride for A. L. Aste at Hamilton and other
meetings. Prince Chap was in difficulties right
from the start and was re|ieatodly pulled up during
tlie running. At no time was Ik* even dangerous and
when the race was practically over he closed with a
good burst of speed and was beaten a head by
Pretty Molly for fourth place.
A number of horsemen who remained over at
Montreal for the King Edward Park meeting ar-
rived this morning and were at Counaught Park.
\V. E. Burke came over with Henry Hutchison.
Jockeys Dreyer and Vandnsen also arrived and
both had mounts during the afternoon.
C. E. Rowe sold at private sale this morning to
Hr. Webster of Ottawa, the Kannockbiirn horse.
Kann Hard. The latter will lie schooled through
the field with the idea of making a steeplechaser
of him. Several other Ottawa gentlemen have sig-
nified their intention of purchasing thoroughbreds.
After Pat Rutledge won the second race he was
bid up $200 over his entered price of $500 by
A. R. Bressler. but was retained by bis owner.
The boost was in rebuilt ion for the running up of
York I.ad by S. Louis yesterday.
Several wagon loads of grass and clover were
distributed among the stables this morning by the
track superintendent and it made a great hit with
the horsemen who are loud in their praise of the
management for the consideration that has been
shown them during the meeting.

CHICAGO, FRIDAY, JUNE 20, 1913.
JAMAICA MEETING TO BE TRANSFERRED TO BELMONT PARK
New York. June 19. Notwithstanding threatening
weather, a large crowd made the trip to Belmont
Park this a Her noon and not only did they witness
a good day’s racing, but also saw tlie horses run
well to form, as rive of tlie races were won either
by Involutes or second choices. .1. I... Holland ear
ried off (lie honors of the day when lie captured two
purses, scoring in Hie third with . that sturdy old
campaigner. Donald Macdonald, and following it
up by winning the Great American Stakes with
Gainer. in this race E. F. Cooney’s crack colt.
Punch Bowl, was asked lo take up 125 pounds and
concede much weight to bis opponents. ibis he
failed to do alt hough luck was against him. lie
broke in a tangle and was also ttotnered light a'ter
the start and thru to make matters worse, lie
swerved badly in the last quarter when Mcf alley
used his whip, si that lie failed to tig lire promi-
nently. Gainer raced in a goo | pesilion until tlie
last i in long, when Wilson sent him to tile front and
tie al once drew out to win lirst money by two
lengths from Mater. 'Mi' race had a net value of
$2,700. This was Wilson’s lirst success since he
came here Intm Canada. A long delay at tlie post
was caused ny fraet iousness on tin- part of Golden

Jockey Tommy MeTaggart continued his good
work during the day hy landing Cadeau and Unpaid
Macdonald winners. But for having lo ride for
his own stable.. In' would also have had the mount
on Gainer.
John Madden lias received several Haltering offers
for the two-year-old tllly Hypatia, Iml none of them
lias come up to what lie thinks she is worth, so
that there has not lieeu any sale as yet. Hypatia
is evidently a high-class luty and Madden thinks
well of tier.
Gwaniix carried the Wilson colors to victory in
the steeplechase race. This was his second race
through tlie field and also his second win. Owanux
jumped excellently throughout the race.
It is announced that the meeting which it was
proposed to conduct at Jamaica will lie transferred
to Belmont Park. The original plans called for the
halting of racing at Belmout Park on July 5 and
the I iegin ning of the Mctro|«olitan Jockey Club sea-
son at Jamaica. N. Y.. on July S. However, in
response to a request from owners of thoroughbreds
that tlie Jamaica meeting be transferred to Belmont
Park, racing will continue at the latter course un-
til July 21.
Bistrict Attorney Charles N. Wysong of Nassau
county lias received orders from Gov. Sulzer to
bend his energies to securing concrete proof of bet
ting at Belmout Park. The Governor made it
plain that if he is furnished with real proof of
betting at the track he will take measures to stop
horse racing. lie has advised District Attorney
Wysong to communicate with persons who pretend
t hey have this evidence ami if lie is able to obtain
tlie evidence to present it to the Grand Jury of
Nassau county.
Gov. Sulzer’s orders, it is said, were prompted
h.v the publication of a story in the New York
American that proof of open gambling had been ob-
tained hy detectives of Hie Burns agency. The
District Attorney, who lias visited Belmont Park
ever since Decoration Day to observe the enforce-
ment of the law, is quoted as follows:
"I intend to have a subpoena issued for Editor
Arthur Brisbane of the New York Evening Journal
ordering him to appear before a county Justice ami
supply tlie names of tlie Burns detectives who have
secured evidence of law breaking. I asked Mr.
Brisbane over the telephone to furnish my office
with tlie information In- had obtained through his
detectives so that I could begin action al once.
But lie refused, saying that tlie evidence would
be reserved for publication in the New York Anieri
can. As .Mr. Brisbane and tlie Hears! newspapers
charge that there is open gambling and honkuiak
ing at the track I intend to afford an op|>ortuuity
for l In-in to furnish legal proof in open court.
”It is my desire to prosecute the persons al-
leged to I,,- boikinakers hy Mr. Brisbane ami the
llearst newspapers and 1 will use all tlie evidence
that may lie- in their possession. From personal
observations, however. I have not seen open vio-
lations of tin- law and am deeply interested in
whatever evidence private detectives may have dis-
covered al tin- track.”
W. C. Fessenden, better known on tin- turf as
Wally, is among those named as having accept -d
wagers from tlie Burns detectives. Fessenden once
owned a horse which won at Jamaica several years
ago at odds of lull to 1. He never lias lieen recog-
nized as a bookmaker. He was at *" line, .Mass.,
this week and one of his friends at Belmont Park
had received a telegram asking for enough money
lo lmy a railroad ticket to this city. Allan Pink
erton. who lias charge of (lie police arrangements
at tin- local tracks, called attention to the fact that
of more than fifty former bookmakers who are m
tin* habit "f attending the races not one bad been
implicated by the Burns men. Pinkerton assert. al
that several of the names mentioned by the Burns
people never had been beard of at tlie tracks.
The New York Sun says of tlie Shane case de-
cision:
“The Court of Appeals dismissed the Shane bel-
ting ease, recently a ffirne-d by tlie Appellate Di
vision of the Supreme Court in Brooklyn, on the
ground that tin- papers had been improperly drawn
by the authorities in Nassau county. The appeal
was made in la-half of Justice of the Peace Ciutrlhs
F. Gittins instead of tin* people of tin- State of
New York. According to eminent legal anthorPy
another appeal will lie taken in October. Mean-
while tin* Appellate Division's ruling on the Siqjij-
der decision will remain good law and conditions
at the race tracks will not lie altered. Racing
men regret the error committed in taking the case
to the highest court.”
Weights for tlie Brooklyn Handicap, one mile and

unlay, are as follows:

Wins Allowance Race at Latonia for Which Roamer
Rules Favorite — Theresa Gill Runs Sensa-
tionally Fast Over Dull Track.
Cincinnati. O.. June 19. — .1. W. May’s Theresa
Gill furnished the chief incident of today's racing
at Latonia l,y scoring a sensational victory iu the
handicap at six furlongs, some of tin* best short
distance racers here being among tin* vanquished.
In view of tier defeat in a previous start her show-
ing this afternoon was remakahle, for she spread-
eagled her opposition and won eased lo a canter iu
the fast time of 1:12 over a track that was dull
and moist iu simts. In her preceding start, she
was handled by Buxton and landed sixth. Sehago
winning handily iu 1:12% over a fast track. Mar-
tin had Hie mount this afternoon and la* hustled
her away from the isist in vigorous fashion and
increased his advantage witli every stride so that
she ultimately won by six lengths. Sehago disposed
of Casey Jones for second place. Figuring that
track conditions Ik* against) Theresa Gill, her owner
sought permission ibis morning from Judge Price
to have her excused from starting, liut the per-
mission was not obtained.
The talent again experienced a setback in their
lietting operations. Korfhage being Hu* only first
choice lo win. Henry Rilie, a supposed “good
thing” in the second race, was supiiorted with rare
confidence, but was beaten a short margin by
World's Wonder in a bard struggle.
J. N. Camden's Rringhurst showed himself to
be a smart youngster when lie won the third race
iu handy fashion from Roots and Saddle and Minda.
Roamer was the favorite in this race, but whatever
chance In* might have had went glimmering soon
after the start when jockey Martin timidly took
him out of i-ontent ion. Martin figured in another
poor exhibition while astride Impression, tin* fav-
orite of the closing rape. 1 1 ist lack of alertness
at the barrier paused him to get away poorly
and lie then took bis mount Pack to last place and
went wide on tlie first two turns. Milton B. warn
this race from the poorly handled Bonanza.
The J. F. Newman stable scored its first success
oil a Kentucky track this season when Mother
Katcbam, an outsider, took the purse in tlie li ft It
race, for which Guide Post ami La Mode were
the choices. The last-named brought up in second
Plata-.
Jockey Kcderis was suspended (for five days in
the second race for attempting to interfere with
World’s Wonder while riding Henry Rit te.
Jockeys Kirsclibaum and Tnplin were eaeh sus-
pended for five days hy starter Cassidy tor disobedi-
ent a* at the , Mist in Hie opening race.
F. I). Weir and II. C. Applegate decided tmlay
to reject all pro|Hisitions for Old Rosebud’s transfer
until the colt reaches Saratoga, where ho will Ik*
shipped at Hie close of Latonia racing.
Jockey Shilling, writing from the east to a
friend here, states that lie lias despaired of getting
a license this season from the Jockey Club that
will enable him to ride. He also volunteered the In-
formation that his wealthy father-in-law would bo
an extensive purchaser of horses at (he coming dis-
persal sale of the Charles Kohler estate.
Jockey Loftus received word today that Rudolfc,
winner of the Kentucky Handicap, would la- shipped
here to start in tin- valuable Independence Handicap
and that his riding services were also in demand
by owner Busclicineyer for Hawthorn in the Ham
ilton Derby, to tie run June 20. Loftus has accepted
the mounts on liotli horses.
J. B. Kes|»oss will ship iiis string of racers lo
Hamilton, tint., for the racing there, and later
will go to Fort Erie and Windsor.
Trainer Jack Adkins stated today that Ruekliorn
will not till any engagements until fall. His recent
mishap, while not as grave as at first suptiosed.
is sufficiently serious to keep him from racing for
some time.
Today's attendance was again of generous pro-
portions, despite the intense heat prevailing in the
city.
Rringhurst, Mother Kateham and Milton R.. com-
prising the three-horse combination, paid $218.25
to each investor of $2. Korfhage and World’s Won-
der paid $11.40.
The following work-outs took place this morning

TRACERY THROWN BY A SUFI RAGIST.
London, June 19. — In tin- race for the Gold Ctip
at Ascot today tlie American colt. Tracery, was
passing into the lead when a mail darted into the
track from a position near tin- royal enclosure,
which was occupied by King George and Queen
Mary, and grasping Tracer.v’s bridle brought the
horse, his jockey uud himself to tie- ground. Tlie
man was picked up unconscious witli a fractured
skull and was pronounced probably fatally injured.
He carried a suffragist Hag and a pistol and was
evidently inspired to his mad deed by a similar
occurence recently at Epsotn while the Derby was
being run. The horse and his rider. Whalley,
escaped iujtiry.
Tracery was second choice in the betting and in
all probability would have won but for the tragic
interference. As it was -T. Pilkingtou’s five-year-
